Engineering Toolkit

£79.00 incl.vat / year

Seven tools: cable tray, trunking, conduit, cable duct, generator load, earthing and fire alarm design to BS 5839-1. Every new tool joins the same subscription.

Before you size anything, you do four jobs: work out what you need, find the standards that apply, calculate, then write it up for the client. Only one of those is engineering; the other three take the afternoon, every time, on work you do just often enough to relearn it. Each tool does all four for the selection you make, verified and cited, with the diagram drawn for your cables. Free to run; the Engineering Toolkit gives you the editable, storable, issue-ready version.

Description

Before you can size an underground duct, a tray, an earthing arrangement or a standby generator, you do four separate jobs. You work out what you actually need. You work out which standards apply, and find the current version of each. You run the calculation. Then you write it up for a client. Only the third of those feels like engineering. The other three are the ones that kill your time.

Do NOT assume the tools can only help with the numbers, and leave the requirement, the standards and the report back to you. These do not. For the exact selection you make, each tool works out what is required, applies the standards, runs the calculation, and produces the report and the diagram, drawn for your cables and your configuration and not a generic template. Every claim is cited to the clause, table or DNO source it came from, so it is yours to check and to defend.

Run any tool free and you see the full result on screen. The Engineering Toolkit is for keeping it: the editable Excel, Word, CSV or text schedule, the clean branded PDF for issue, the project saved to your account to reopen and revise, and the full worked reasoning behind each result that a free run shows only in part.

The tools

  • Cable tray and ladder. BS 7671 reference methods, grouping factors, BS 8519 drop rod sizing and single core fault restraint, with the tray drawn to scale.
  • Cable trunking. On-Site Guide Table E5/E6 factors extended to 240 mm2, the 45 percent space factor with flat cables counted on the major axis, compartments and segregation, the grouping factor an internal barrier does not remove, riser and fire stopping rules. Auto sizing proposes manufacturer standard sizes only.
  • Conduit. The exact Appendix E factors by run length and bends, the space factor method for FP200 type drops, and the enclosed rating check that catches a 20 A radial on a paired 2.5 mm2 final.
  • Cable duct. DNO adoptable tables against the BS 7671 route (4B4, 4C1, 4C3), duct schedules with the design record, and the trench drawn to scale against the other services.
  • Generator load. A time-step engine for life safety supplies: stalled rotor worst case, staggered starts, fuel and endurance, to BS 8519, BS 9999 and the BSRIA BG 70 basis.
  • Earthing selection. The earthing arrangement decision walked through step by step to BS 7671, with the reasoning recorded.
  • Fire alarm design. Twelve steps to BS 5839-1:2025. The system category taken from the BS 9999 risk profile or Approved Document B, zones and their limits, detector siting and spacing, sound levels, standby battery calculation, and a cause and effect matrix derived from the rule base. 712 cited rules, and every answer on screen cites the clause it came from.

Every new tool joins the same subscription.

Built on BS 7671, the IET Guidance Notes and Guide to Cables, BS 5839-1 and BS 9999, and DNO and IDNO practice, read first-hand and verified against the source. You use the tools for the four jobs; you keep design control, and responsibility for the final design stays with the designer.
