Organizational Drivers

ELI5-S1: BIM Basics E14: Organizational Driver

Understanding the Organizational Driver in BIM Information Exchange

In this post, we introduce a new term: the Organizational Driver, based on observations from my MSc Thesis.

ELI5-S1 BIM Basics E14: Organizational Driver

To illustrate the key function and relevance of the Organizational Driver in information exchange, we’ve created a storyboard that visually represents these concepts. You can view the storyboard in the carousel at the top of this page. Here, we will elaborate on each point.

What is an Organizational Driver?

The Organizational Driver is a new term used to describe the initial component in the information exchange sequence. It represents the steps and actions involved in initiating the exchange process.

Key Functions of the Organizational Driver

Answering “Why”

The Organizational Driver answers the fundamental question of “why” the information must be exchanged. This initial trigger is essential for creating meaningful and project-specific Information Requirements.

Triggering the Process

The Organizational Driver acts as a trigger for the information exchange process, leading to various events such as acquisition, surveys, and compliance with specific requirements.

Establishing AIR

For example, the Organizational Driver can initiate an acquisition event, leading to a survey that helps establish the Asset Information Requirements (AIR).

Multiple Drivers

Organizational drivers can be diverse, including financial, social, wellbeing, environmental, and sustainability factors.

Carbon as a New Indicator

We used to evaluate projects using time, cost, and quality performance indicators. Now, carbon has emerged as the fourth crucial indicator.

Ensuring Purpose, Relevance, and Context

The Organizational Driver ensures that the information exchange process is purposeful, relevant, and contextual, aligning with the overall goals of the project.

Conclusion

By understanding the concept of the Organizational Driver, we can better manage the initial steps in the information exchange process in BIM projects. This perspective is crucial for improving the efficiency and relevance of information management in construction projects.

We hope this storyboard and blog post have provided you with a clearer understanding of the Organizational Driver in BIM. For more insights and updates, stay tuned to our blog and continue exploring our ELI5 series.
