Trunking Size Calculator

This trunking size calculator works to BS 7671 and the On-Site Guide Appendix E.

Size a cable trunking for the cables it must hold: singles by the On-Site Guide Table E5/E6 factors, sheathed and multicore cables by the 45% space-factor method. Print the record that proves it.

Grounded in BS 7671OSG Appendix EBS 5839-1BS 5266-1BS 8519
How this works
  1. Add a trunking section. A section is one trunking size on one route: set its material, size (or Auto), orientation and compartments, then drop cables in, or pick a typical situation and edit it.
  2. The method follows the cable type. Single-core non-sheathed cables (BS 6004 PVC / BS 7211 LSZH) use the exact On-Site Guide Table E5 factors against the Table E6 trunking factors, extended to 240 mm² by the ESC tables. Sheathed and multicore cables use the 45% space-factor rule, with flat twin-and-earth counted on its MAJOR axis as the Guide requires. Both include your spare-capacity margin.
  3. Read the verdicts and print the record: trunking size per section, the factor or space-factor calculation, the segregation and compartment checks (fire alarm gets a partitioned compartment of its own), the grouping consequence an internal barrier does NOT remove, and the drawings.

Free to run for everyone. Engineering Toolkit subscribers get the compliance record with verbatim clause citations, the in-trunking rating check, editable Excel / Word / CSV / Text exports and My Projects.

16/09/2026 (1.3.8): the wording in the tool was revised in plain UK English. The compliance record line and the How this works list now say in the tool, and the segregation and compartment checks are called checks. The calculations, the printed report and the exports are unchanged. The 1,538 scenarios in each tier, the derived-input check and the term-of-art check were re-run on 1.3.8 with no findings; verified live after upload. 15/09/2026 (1.3.7): the notes written inside the program code were rewritten in plain UK English. The calculations, the wording shown in the tool, the printed report and the exports are unchanged. The 1,538 scenarios in each tier were re-run on 1.3.7 with no findings; verified live after upload. 15/09/2026 (1.3.5 and 1.3.6): every citation of the fire alarm and emergency lighting standards was read back against the current editions. BS 5839-1:2025 replaced the 2017 edition: the compartment rule is now cited to 35.5, non-metallic trunking to BS EN 50085-1 (35.7) and the support note to 35.3, which says non-metallic trunking as the sole means of support is likely to be precluded. BS 5266-1:2025 replaced the 2016 edition: its clause 8.2 applies to emergency lighting fed from a central power supply system, so the partition, the marking of reserved trunking and the non-combustible support are now stated for that case, and supply cables to self-contained luminaires are named as installed like a normal lighting circuit (8.1); the subscriber compliance record quotes clause 8.2.6 of the 2025 edition word for word. Two new automated checks read every citation, and the wording of every program file, in the tool, the report and the printed sheet, and fail on the 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 builds; the 1,538 scenarios, the derived-input check and the term-of-art check were re-run on 1.3.6 in both tiers with no findings; no factor, size or limit changed; verified live after upload. 11/09/2026 (1.3.4): a check across every PD tool for an input shown to every user that only a minority case reads. The storey height field was shown on every vertical section, although only a vertical section that penetrates a fire-rated element reads it, for the slab crossings in the support note. It now shows only once that box is ticked on a vertical section, and ticking the box reveals it at once. An automated check for it was added and fails on the 1.3.3 build; the 1,538 scenarios, the derived-input check and the term-of-art check were re-run on 1.3.4 in both tiers with no findings; no factor, size or limit changed; verified live after upload. 10/09/2026 (1.3.3): a check across every PD tool for a figure printed as entered that the user never gave. Every new section started with a 6 m length that was printed in the check row, the schedule and the report as if entered, and a vertical section left at it was told to provide intermediate supports for a 6 m run nobody had specified. A new section now starts with the length blank: the capacity result does not depend on it, and the support count, the pin racks and the fire-stopping positions ask for it until it is entered. An automated check now tests a fresh section in both tiers (blank field, the request line, no vertical note without a length, the note once a length is entered, blank again after Start again and on an added section) and fails on the 1.3.2 build; the 1,538 scenarios, the derived-input check and the term-of-art check were re-run on 1.3.3 with no findings; no factor, size or limit changed; verified live after upload. 04/09/2026 (1.3.2): the sizing basis is now headed How this size was reached and laid out as numbered steps for each section, with the section's size and verdict at the head of its card and every figure in bold, so the calculation behind the answer reads as a worked example for the case entered. The steps are the same calculations as before and the report shows them under the same heading. The 1,538 scenarios were re-run on 1.3.2 in both tiers with no findings; no factor, size or limit changed; verified live after upload. 04/09/2026 (1.3.1): a check of whether every input the standard names by a term of art is defined in the tool, printed back and questioned where a wrong entry can be seen. The custom internal width and depth fields took the catalogue size, which names trunking by its outside dimensions, so 75 x 50 entered gave 3750 mm2 where the tool's own Table E6 figure for that size is 3456 mm2; the custom cable diameter field took the conductor size in place of the overall diameter. Both now show help naming the figure meant and the entry that is wrong. A custom steel or PVCu size equal to one on the standard list, or a diameter equal to a conductor size, prints a check line with the figure the tool holds while still giving the answer; a fire-rated system, always entered by hand, is not questioned this way. The 1,538 scenarios were re-run on 1.3.1 with no findings; no factor, size or limit changed; verified live after upload. 04/09/2026: the full input range was enumerated, 1,538 scenarios in each tier: every single-core size from 1.5 to 240 mm2 in PVC and LSZH, solid and stranded, FP200 and BS 7629 multicores, ESC three-core and flat cables, mixed sets, at four quantities, three spare capacities, one and two compartments, steel and PVCu, every standard steel size checked manually, the fire-rated path with and without the manufacturer size, and blank or nonsense spare entries. The proposed size, the verdict word, the support centres against On-Site Guide Table D4, the grouping factor against BS 7671 Table 4C1 and the Table E5 and E6 figures were each recomputed independently from the source tables and compared with what the tool prints. No difference was found. 03/09/2026 (1.3.0): a check across every PD tool that every printed value is reached through the input the standard derives it from. A fire-rated system was found to be sized and passed on the steel Table E6, with its current rating printed without the BS 8519 Annex B correction: it now asks for the manufacturer's internal size and tested support centres and prints the rating rule instead of a figure. Current ratings are given only for the FP200 cable the datasheet covers, other cables are pointed to their BS 7671 Appendix 4 table. Blank spare and blank length ask for the value; circuits beyond Table 4C1 say so; compartment widths can be entered; Band I cables state whether they are insulated for 300/500 V before the Reg 528.1 note applies; the 528.1 methods are numbered 1 to 6 as the A4 text has them. The audit checks were run in both tiers; verified live after upload; no size or factor changed on steel or PVCu. 02/09/2026 (1.2.3): every cited BS 7671 clause was read back against BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, BS 5266-1:2025 and BS 5839-1:2025; the result summary names the section with the highest utilisation and the trunking cover rule is cited to Reg 530.4.3; no size or factor changed. 02/09/2026 (1.2.2): the revised wording was checked in the tool against the house style, using the FF core transition preset; no size or factor changed. 33 checks were run: both ESC worked examples (unit system and space factor), the RM Technical chart example, a real project cable schedule, and the published internal-area figures (75x50 = 3455 mm2, 75x75 = 5270 mm2, reproduced by factor / 0.45). All 37 steel factors were verified against On-Site Guide Table E6. The grouping check was verified against the FP200 Gold datasheet and Table 4C1.

Scope and limits
  • Sizes trunking sections for single-core cables (BS 6004 PVC / BS 7211 LSZH, 1.5 to 240 mm2) by the Table E5/E6 factors and for sheathed, multicore and flat cables by the 45% space factor. Auto proposes manufacturer standard sizes; any Table E6 or custom internal size can be checked. Compartment capacity is split equally unless the compartment widths are entered: confirm real compartment areas from the catalogue. PVCu capacities are the manufacturer 45% areas; a fire-rated (BS EN 1366-5) system is sized only on the manufacturer's internal size and support centres that you enter. The grouping factor uses an estimated or user-entered circuit count up to the 20 circuits Table 4C1 tabulates. This tool checks the containment: the circuit design of record (Ib, In, Iz, voltage drop, Zs) remains the designer's; the in-trunking rating shown is the FP200 datasheet figure, other cables are pointed to their BS 7671 table.
What's changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.8The wording in the tool was revised in plain UK English: the compliance record line and the How this works list now say in the tool, and the segregation and compartment checks are called checks. The calculations, the printed report and the exports are unchanged
  • September 2026 · v1.3.7The notes written inside the program code were rewritten in plain UK English. The calculations, the wording shown in the tool, the printed report and the exports are unchanged
  • September 2026 · v1.3.6The emergency lighting lines now cite BS 5266-1:2025 and say which wiring they apply to: the partition in shared trunking (8.2.6), the marking of reserved trunking (8.2.5) and the non-combustible support that rules out plastic trunking as the means of support (8.2.3) apply to luminaires fed from a central power supply system; supply cables to self-contained emergency luminaires may be installed as a normal lighting circuit (8.1). The segregation and fixing lines read should, not must, and the subscriber compliance record quotes clause 8.2.6 of the 2025 edition word for word, which replaced 2011 wording under an undated reference. No factor, size or limit changed.
  • September 2026 · v1.3.5The fire alarm lines now cite BS 5839-1:2025, which replaced the 2017 edition: 35.5 for the compartment rule, 35.7 for non-metallic trunking to BS EN 50085-1, 25.7 for the 1 mm2 conductor minimum, 25.9 for the single cable colour and 35.3 for cable support. Two statements were corrected against the 2025 text: non-metallic trunking in a fire alarm system should conform to BS EN 50085-1, not BS 4678-4, and plastic trunking as the sole support of fire alarm cables is likely to be precluded, not precluded outright. No factor, size or limit changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.4The storey height field shows only on a vertical section that penetrates a fire-rated element, which is the only case that reads it (the slab crossing positions in the run detail). No factor, size or limit changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.3A new section starts with the length blank. The 6 m that every section started with was printed in the check row, the schedule and the report as if it had been entered, and a vertical section left at it was told to provide intermediate supports for a 6 m run nobody had specified. The capacity result does not depend on length; the support count, the pin racks and the fire-stopping positions ask for it until it is entered. No factor, size or limit changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.2The sizing basis is now headed How this size was reached and laid out as numbered steps for each section, with the section's size and verdict at the top of its card and every figure in bold. The steps themselves, and the report section that shows them, are the same calculations as before. No factor, size or limit changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.1The custom internal width and depth fields and the custom cable diameter field now say what they take and what they do not: the internal dimensions, not the catalogue size, which names trunking by its outside size, and the overall diameter over the sheath, not the conductor size. A custom steel or PVCu entry equal to a size on the standard list, or an overall diameter equal to a conductor size, prints a check line with the figure the tool holds and still gives the answer. A fire-rated system, always entered by hand, is not checked this way. No factor, size or limit changed
  • September 2026 · v1.3.0A fire-rated system is sized on the manufacturer internal dimensions only, with its supports at the manufacturer tested centres and its rating stated as the BS 8519 Annex B rule rather than a figure; only FP200 cables take the FP200 Gold rating table and every other cable is pointed to its own BS 7671 Appendix 4 table; a blank spare capacity or length prints a request rather than a default, a spare above 60% is refused, and a circuit count beyond Table 4C1 says so; optional compartment widths replace the equal split, Band I cables state whether they are insulated for 300/500 V so the Reg 528.1 note names the method that applies (the methods are now numbered as the Regulation numbers them), the firestop 400 mm line is named as the Quelfire example, the space factor limit reads from one setting, and the result summary names the section with the worst verdict with its worst compartment figures
  • September 2026 · v1.2.3The result summary and report title name the section with the highest utilisation; the trunking cover rule is cited to BS 7671 Reg 530.4.3 rather than Section 530. No size or factor changed
  • September 2026 · v1.2.2The wording was revised in plain UK English: the worst section is labelled highest utilisation, a limit is called a limit, plurals written out, the on-screen text has no dashes. No size or factor changed
  • August 2026 · v1.2.1The core count numerals on the cable discs read clearly again: the white label background added in 1.2.0 no longer applies to white text on a coloured disc
  • August 2026 · v1.2.0The recommended trunking sizes stay in view in a bar that follows you down the page while you edit the sections. Drawing labels have a white background so they read clearly over the cables, and a review flag on a section reads as plain text rather than a dash
  • August 2026 · v1.1.0Free use is now measured in sessions: three days of anonymous use, then your email continues free use with no password and no account. The in-trunking rating headline (the Iz and the largest device per section) is now free in the tool; the full rating table, the circuit count basis and the verbatim compliance record stay with the Engineering Toolkit, and the report goes by email for free users with print as part of the Toolkit
  • August 2026 · v1.0.8Subscriber-facing copy states what the Engineering Toolkit adds rather than what the free preview lacks
  • July 2026 · v1.0.7Claims audit: the Reg 527.2.3 note said every listed size exceeds 710 mm² internally, which is wrong, and is corrected (the three smallest PVCu mini-trunking sizes fall below it); the non-standard-size note now cites the 18-size Salamandre range precisely
  • July 2026 · v1.0.6Vertical risers gain a storey height input (default 4 m) that places the floor slabs and their internal fire seals in the run detail. Capacity unchanged
  • July 2026 · v1.0.5Run detail: the firestop support rule moved to its own line, clear of the length dimension on risers
  • July 2026 · v1.0.4Identical notes raised by several sections now merge into one card, headed SECTION 1 & SECTION 2
  • July 2026 · v1.0.3Auto sizing proposes manufacturer standard sizes only (Legrand Salamandre, 18 sizes), with the other Table E6 sizes still selectable; new per-section circuit count for Cg, with the counting basis stated
  • July 2026 · v1.0.2Fire-rated crossings show the tested-detail support rule: independent supports both sides of every seal, the first bracket within 400 mm of each seal face, so no load transfers onto the firestop
  • July 2026 · v1.0.1Run detail: the DB origin is drawn with the standard distribution board symbol
  • July 2026 · v1.0.0First release: trunking sizing to BS 7671 and the On-Site Guide Appendix E. Singles by the Table E5/E6 factors to 240 mm², sheathed and multicore by the 45% space factor with the major-axis rule, plus compartment partition checks, vertical riser support, true-scale drawings and reports
