National Annex (NA)

With reference to BS EN ISO 19650 Framework, the working group could not conclude on international codification and standardised conventions. Hence Paul Shillcock and David Churcher, the lead authors, came up with an idea to include a National Annex (NA) in the international standards to allow for regional flexibility and use of local standards already in place. Thus, the BS 1192 and PAS 1192 clauses, which could not be agreed at a national level, have been revised and included in UK National Annex as part of BS EN ISO 19650-2 published in December 2018.

The aim was to provide better guidance that would reduce misinterpretation of the standards and speed up the adoption of BIM processes.[1]

Since the publication, the industry has critiqued the 2018 NA for the use of superseded terminology. For example, the use of PAS 1192 term ‘volume’ or misunderstanding the ‘type’ code use within Field Identification (ID) or the lack of clarification of what information type shall be included within originator, role and status codes. The revised UK National Annex has been published as part of BS EN ISO 19650-2 in February 2021
